Outside the House and down the Fire Escape
At the core of Drabik ‘s exploration lies the metaphor of the house ̶ the physical vessel of the body and the sanctuary of what is known. Stepping „outside the house “ becomes a way of pacing beyond the limitations of comfort and familiarity. The descent „down the fire escape “
signifies a departure from the conscious, hinting at the flames of inner turmoil, and the entrance into the realm of the unconscious and the symbolic. Mystical figures, ghosts, and archetypes are depicted as projections of the human psyche, manifestations of suppressed inner desires, primal instincts, and the collective understanding of the world. The artist plays with them, twisting them around, thus questioning their internalized
structures. As Drabik spent the last months in Japan, her original intention to research on Yōkai and delve into Japanese culture and beliefs unexpectedly shifted. Instead, she found herself confronted with her own cultural identity. The contrasts between Japanese traditions and her
background provided a mirror through which she could see herself more clearly. In this way „outside the house “ also reflects her own personal experience and projections. The figures in her work possess an allure both captivating and unsettling, evoking a sense of
ambiguity. There seems to be tension between the earthly gravity of the body and the spiritual lightness surrounding it. By taking a closer look, one can find underlying feminist questions. Like in ‚monstre sacré ‘, where Drabik reimagines familiar religious imagery, suggesting themes of
transformation and power. The figure, reminiscent of a Byzantine Madonna, challenges traditional depictions, evoking an unsettlingly defiant expression and thus departing from the classical rather reassuring cliché of the virgin mother.
Natalia Drabik, born in Poland and based in Düsseldorf, Germany, is an artist who graduated from the Art Academy Düsseldorf and studied under the artists Tomma Abts and Gregor Schneider. She has received grants from institutions such as DAAD and Kunststiftung NRW and
was awarded the psychoanalytical prize „the Missing Link “ in 2019 by the Psychoanalytical Institute in Zurich, Switzerland.
家の外へ、非常階段を下る
ドラビックの探求の中心には、家というメタファーがあります。それは身体という物理的な器として知らているものの聖域です。「家の外」に出ることは、快適さや馴染みの領域を超える方法となり、非常階段を下ることは内面の苦悩の炎を示唆し、意識からの離脱、無意識の領域への入り口を象徴します。 神秘的な姿、幽霊、および元型は、人間の心の投影として描かれており、抑圧された内なる欲望、原始的な本能、世界の共通理解の表れです。アーティストはそれらを扱い、ひねり、内面化された構造を疑問視します。ドラビックが日本で過ごした最後の数か月、妖怪の研究や日本の文化・信念に没頭するという予想外の変化がありました。異なる環境での体験は彼女自身の文化的アイデンティティに直面させ、日本の伝統と彼女の背景との対比は、彼女が自分自身をより明確に見るための鏡となりました。このようにして、「家の外」は彼女自身の個人的
